The virus is not known to be native to other continents, such as North America.\" width=\"775\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lifestyle.victoriamedia.net\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/about-ebola.jpg 775w, https:\/\/www.lifestyle.victoriamedia.net\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/about-ebola-300x141.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 775px) 100vw, 775px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>7 November 2015 \u2013 The World Health Organization (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/\">WHO<\/a>) today declared that Ebola virus transmission has been stopped in Sierra Leone, as 42 days \u2013 two Ebola virus incubation cycles \u2013 have now passed since the last person confirmed to have the disease had a second negative blood test, and pledged continued support to the country towards the recovery of essential health systems.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since Sierra Leone recorded the first Ebola case in May 2014, a total number of 8,704 people were infected and 3,589 have died, 221 of them healthcare workers, all of whom we remember on this day\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afro.who.int\/en\/sierra-leone\/press-materials\/item\/8139-who-commends-sierra-leone-for-stopping-ebola-virus-transmission.html\">said<\/a> Dr. Anders Nordstr\u00f6m, WHO Representative in Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n<p>The country now enters a 90-day period of enhanced surveillance which will run until 5 February 2016, and WHO will continue to support Sierra Leone during this period. This new phase is critical for ensuring early detection of any possible new cases of Ebola virus disease.<\/p>\n<p>Commending the Government of Sierra Leone and its people on achieving this significant milestone in the country&#8217;s fight against Ebola, the UN health agency underscored that Sierra Leone had achieved this milestone \u201cthrough tremendous hard work and commitment while battling the most unprecedented Ebola virus disease outbreak in human history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The strong leadership of the Sierra Leone Government, working with partners from around the globe, mobilized the necessary expertise needed to contain the outbreak. According to WHO, Sierra Leone experienced a massive rise in cases in September and October 2014 which was curbed by putting in place treatment facilities, setting up safe and dignified burial teams and working with communities to identify and stop Ebola.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the use of rapid response teams and strong community involvement became the cornerstone of the national response strategy, continued WHO. International partners supported the Government to maintain a rapid response capacity to detect, identify and shut down any new transmission chains, and also contributed technical assistance, personnel, food, supplies and equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The Ebola outbreak has decimated families, the health system, the economy and social structures. All need to recover.
